A recent study conducted by the Department of General and Emergency Surgery found that patients with mild gallstone pancreatitis (GSP) who undergo cholecystectomy sooner rather than later tend to have shorter hospital stays. The researchers analyzed data from adult hospitalizations at Menoufia University Hospitals and classified patients into early and late cohorts based on when they had laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The study concluded that cholecystectomy performed after 2 days of admission for mild GSP was associated with increased major adverse events, 30-day readmissions, and nonhome discharge. This research provides valuable insights into the timing of surgical intervention for patients with gallstone pancreatitis. [Extracted from the article] |
