A new report from the Florida Orthopedic Institute discusses the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in patients with ipsilateral infected arthroplasties. The study aimed to evaluate the incidence of developing a second PJI in patients with arthroplasties on the same extremity and identify associated risk factors. The researchers retrospectively reviewed patients treated for lower-extremity PJI and found that the risk of developing an ipsilateral PJI was not greater than that in patients with contralateral total joint arthroplasties (TJAs). However, the use of immunosuppressants was associated with a higher likelihood of developing a separate ipsilateral PJI. [Extracted from the article] |
