Void fraction of refrigerant affects the performance of a refrigeration system in terms of heat transfer and pressure drop. This paper discusses the behavior of vapor quality and void fraction of refrigerant R454B in a h orizontal evaporator. These parameters were investigated along the evaporator pipe from the inlet end to the outlet end at different evaporating temperature from -9°C to 6°C. As the refrigerant travels in the evaporator pipe, the vapor quality increases linearly due to the evaporation of refrigerant. At the evaporator inlet, the vapor quality and void fraction decreases with the increase of evaporating temperature. A linear correlation between vapor quality and evaporating temperature is found in this study. A decrease of vapor fraction by 0.0048 is found for each 1 °C increase of evaporating temperature. Instead of linear, the correlation between the void fraction at the evaporator inlet and evaporating temperature can be best approximated by a second order polynomial. In this study, variation of evaporating temperature from 6 °C to -9°C results in the range of void fraction at the evaporator inlet of 0.921 to 0.966. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
