Purpose: Adaptive response (AR), which represents a protective effect caused by a small priming dose of ionizing radiation followed by a challenging dose, has been reported to be highly variable among individuals in numerous studies. Therefore, the current study has examined the intrinsic radiosensitivity as a disregarded possible effective factor on the variable manifestation of AR. Materials and Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells derived from eight healthy donors were exposed to 2 Gy X-ray radiation to determine the individual's radiosensitivity using the limiting dilution assay. Furthermore, to assess the AR induction, frequency of chromosome aberrations was analyzed in lymphocytes received 2 Gy X-rays preceded by 0.1 Gy exposure. Results: The results have shown considerably higher radiosensitivity rates in four out of eight donors that have exhibited ARs. Furthermore, chromosome aberrations reduction was demonstrated to be inversely correlated with lymphocytes surviving fraction at 2 Gy values. Conclusions: Our findings revealed a significant relationship between the intrinsic radiosensitivity and the radio-adaptive response. Accordingly, this radiosensitivity-dependent AR has the potential of affecting outcomes of radiotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
