The article explores the primary interjections ѡ/о, ѡле/оле, охъ/ ѡхъ, оухъ, оува/оуа, оувꙑ in the works by Bulgarian men of letters from the end of the 9th to the beginning of the 12th century, including those that have been preserved in later Slavic copies. Their reconstructed protographs provide additional, and, at times, totally new material, which helps to further illuminate and explain the problem. A special focus is put on those primary interjections which also function as particles in the earliest literature such as: воле, о веле, е, сѣ, се, есе. The interjections are analyzed in view of their semantic function (emotional-expressive, emotional-cognitive, directive, and polyfunctional), as well as etymology, Greek correspondences, and distribution in written monuments in view of genre and stylistics.
