Researchers from Benha University have conducted a study to determine if speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) can be used to differentiate between ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) and non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NICM). The study involved 100 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, with 50 cases having a history of ischemia confirmed by coronary angiography (ICM) and 50 cases with NICM who had normal coronary angiography. The results showed that patients with NICM had significantly greater left ventricular volumes, lower left ventricular systolic function, and lower global longitudinal and circumferential strain. The researchers concluded that two-dimensional-STE can help differentiate between ICM and NICM, with NICM showing a specific strain pattern of basal worsening of left ventricular systolic strain with relative apical sparing.
