A study conducted by investigators at Hebei Medical University in Shijiazhuang, People's Republic of China, explores the causal associations between modifiable risk factors and intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). IVDD is a common degenerative condition that is believed to be a major cause of lower back pain. The study used bidirectional Mendelian randomization to examine potential causal effects of various risk factors on IVDD. The findings suggest that genetic predisposition to smoking, alcohol intake, and standing height are associated with an increased risk of IVDD, while education level and household income have a protective effect. Sleeplessness, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes are identified as important risk factors causally associated with IVDD. Increased levels of triglycerides, fasting glucose, and HbA1c also significantly increase the odds of IVDD. However, the causal associations between hip osteoarthritis, HDL, apolipoprotein A-I, BMI, and obesity trait factors with IVDD are considered uncertain. [Extracted from the article] |
