Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine explored the associations between two cell adhesion molecules, VCAM-1 and ICAM-1, and long-term cardiac function in individuals with atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The study found that higher levels of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 were linked to lower left atrial function and left ventricular systolic function, but not to myocardial scar or interstitial fibrosis. The researchers suggest that impaired left atrial reservoir function may be a potential pathway through which these cell adhesion molecules contribute to the risk of AF and HFpEF.
