Parathyroid thermal ablation in 2023: the advent of a third wave for primary hyperparathyroidism.

Abstrakt: The article discusses the advancements in the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) through thermal ablation. PHPT is caused by the overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by parathyroid adenomas. The article describes three waves of treatment for PHPT, with the third wave focusing on patient choice and alternatives to surgery. Thermal ablation techniques such as laser ablation, radiofrequency, microwaves, and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) are explored. The article concludes that while surgery is still the first-line treatment for extrathyroidal adenomas, thermal ablation should be considered as the first-line treatment for intrathyroidal adenomas. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of thermal ablation on complications and to study specific patient groups. [Extracted from the article]
