Abstrakt: This article reports on the discovery of two invasive pathogens, Phytophthora acerina and Phytophthora palmivora, causing root rot, bleeding cankers, and dieback of English walnut trees in Italy. The decline of walnut orchards in Italy has been accompanied by an increase in reports of new diseases. Field surveys revealed a disease incidence of 36% and 40% in two orchards in the Veneto and Marche regions, respectively. The pathogens were identified through morphological, molecular, and phylogenetic analysis, and their pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation trials. This is the first report of these pathogens on English walnut in Italy and worldwide. The researchers emphasize the importance of monitoring and controlling the introduction and spread of these pathogens to prevent further decline and yield reduction in walnut trees.
