The purpose of the research is to determine the social nature and form of existence of «hybrid war» as a modern phenomenon of the sphere of international relations. To conduct the study, a system of methodological support was formed, consisting of the following elements: meaningful logic as a type of logical thinking; the traductive form of inference as a type of logical thinking; background knowledge at the general scientific level of cognition and categorical apparatus - theories of dialectics; precursory knowledge at the concrete-scientific level of cognition and the categorical apparatus of social disciplines: «Military Science», «Political Science», «Theory of International Relations», «Conflict Studies»; methodological tools: historical analysis, comparative analysis, complex analysis, categorical analysis, unity of historical and logical, classification, generalization. According to the results of the study, it was possible to: to systematize the scientific results obtained by experts in certain fields of social disciplines on the relevant phenomenon; to disclose in a logically exhaustive form its content and establish the scope, including in terms of the definition: the composition and the set of basic common and essential features that allow to identify the phenomenon of «hybrid war»; its role as a way of solving the geopolitical goals of opposing states in the process of escalating international conflict; the time and spatial limits of the use of the means by the party initiating the conflict; criterion for the classification and composition of species forms of the corresponding phenomenon.
