A study conducted by researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University explores auditory hyperreactivity in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study found that autistic children often perceive certain sounds as intolerable, leading to aversive behaviors. Traditional noise-cancelling headphones do not consider the diverse aural perceptions of autistic children. To address this, the researchers developed a hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC) system based on aural perception, which showed improvement in the aural perception response of children with autism. The study highlights the importance of designing headphones that cater to the specific needs of children with ASD. [Extracted from the article] |
