Abstrakt: A report from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in Turkey discusses the incidence and impact of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in children and young adults. ARF, which is most commonly caused by group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection, can lead to RHD if not properly treated. The severity of cardiac involvement is the most important factor in determining the prognosis of RHD. The researchers suggest the establishment of a new screening program using echocardiography to prevent cardiac complications in populations at moderate to high risk. The full report can be found in the Turkish Archives of Pediatrics. [Extracted from the article]
