A study conducted at King Saud University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia explored the relationship between depression and anxiety symptoms among patients with epilepsy. The study found that 39.5% of participants had major depressive disorder (MDD) and 27.9% had generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), indicating a higher prevalence of these conditions compared to the general population. Factors that increased susceptibility to seizures were associated with a greater expression of depression and anxiety symptoms. Irregular use of medications was also linked to a higher risk of depression, although the medication lamotrigine was associated with lower rates of depression. The study suggests that more attention should be given to addressing the mental health needs of individuals with epilepsy. [Extracted from the article] |
