A report from Northwest A&F University in Shaanxi, China, discusses the development of a highly stable and intelligent food packaging film. The film incorporates bilberry anthocyanins and tannin acids into a sodium alginate-carrageenan polysaccharide matrix, resulting in outstanding antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The film also effectively blocks UV rays and improves the storage and color stability of anthocyanins. It can monitor beef freshness and reduce variability in visual recognition through integration with a smartphone app. The research suggests that these composite films have great potential for food freshness monitoring and active smart packaging.
