A study conducted at University Hospital Regensburg in Germany aimed to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations in patients with amyloidosis. The researchers found that GI involvement in amyloidosis is associated with a higher risk of GI bleeding, especially when mucosal lesions are present. The study included 63 patients with different types of amyloidosis, and 23 of them (36.5%) were diagnosed with GI involvement. The most common initial GI symptoms were diarrhea and abdominal pain, and the affected GI organs were primarily the colon and the stomach. Endoscopic findings included ulcerations, mucosal inflammation, polyps, and erosions. The mortality rate 5 years after diagnosis was 47.8%. The researchers concluded that clinicians should be aware of GI bleeding as a manifestation of amyloidosis and that a definite diagnosis should be based on biopsy results.
