Abstrakt: No studies on semantic change aim to develop a prototype of a loanword, even though many studies have been done in various languages. This study aims to develop a prototype of the semantic change of Arabic loanwords, focusing on extending their meaning in Malay. This study employed qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) methodology, which begins with a research question: There are patterns of extending the meaning of Arabic loanwords in Malay. To answer this, Arabic loanwords with labels and unlabelled with Ar were extracted from the Kamus Dewan Perdana (KDP) and then cross-referenced with the Arabic dictionary, al-Mu'jam al-Wasit (MW) to verify the etymology and to get the meaning of the word. As an initial step to develop a prototype, only the Arabic loanwords of entries A and B were extracted. Results from QCA revealed that of 588 Arabic loanwords found from entries A and B, only 32 underwent the process of semantic extension. This semantic extension can be divided into four patterns of general definitions and ten patterns of specific definitions. These 14 patterns generate two formulas, namely superset and relative complement. The superset refers to the meaning of Arabic loanwords being extended in the Malay language in contrast, the relative complement refers to different sets of meaning elements in Arabic. This prototype would provide a formula for the meaning of loanwords in Malay and could be applied to analyse loanwords in other languages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
