Abstrakt: | The article analyzes the cross over of Irish poet Seamus Heaney to English poet George Herbert in his poems. It discusses Heaney's use of Herbert in the poetry collections "The Government of the Tongue" and "The Redress of Poetry" as a metaphor of resistance to doctrine as an act of belief and to describe the function of poetry in heightened political times. It explores Heaney's references to Herbert in the poem "The Spirit Level" to reflect a spiritual balancing act or equilibrium. |
