A bill passed in Colorado in May 2023 requires health care facilities, including Catholic hospitals, to provide advance notification of health care services that they conscientiously refuse to provide. The authors of the article argue that Catholic hospitals should improve their advance notification practices without being coerced by law. They suggest that explicit statements of treatment restrictions associated with Catholic identity are needed, as patients may not automatically infer these restrictions. The authors also address concerns about individual providers giving advance notification and emphasize the importance of improving notification practices, particularly in cases where vulnerable patients may face delays in receiving emergency contraception after rape.
