This letter, published in the journal Neurological Sciences, discusses a rare case of Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosed 12 years after the onset of multiple sclerosis (MS). The patient, a 56-year-old Japanese woman, initially presented with symptoms of incomplete tetraplegia and was diagnosed with white matter disorder of unknown origin. Subsequent brain MRI scans revealed lesions consistent with MS, and the patient experienced relapses and received treatment with methylprednisolone. In 2016, she developed symptoms of PD, which were confirmed by cardiac MIBG scintigraphy. The authors discuss the relationship between the location of abnormal brain MRI findings and parkinsonian features, suggesting that demyelination due to MS may contribute to the development of PD.
