New research from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (FIOCRUZ) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, explores the degradation of antibiotics in aquatic ecosystems using a low-cost iron mining residue as a photocatalyst. The study found that the mining residue, which contains high iron content, was effective in degrading antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline. The research identified the optimal conditions for degradation and the main reactive species involved in the process. The study concludes that the mining residue is a cost-effective and efficient alternative for the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, contributing to sustainable development goals and circular economy principles.
