A study conducted at University Hospital in Cordoba, Spain, examined the diastolic function in long-term survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The researchers compared the diastolic function parameters and left atrial strain between the survivors and a control group of healthy siblings. They found that the survivors showed a subtle impairment of diastolic function, which was detected with atrial strain but not with conventional measurements. The impairment was more pronounced in those with higher exposure to cardiotoxic treatment. This research provides valuable insights into the potential risks faced by childhood cancer survivors.
