A study conducted by the Department of Anesthesiology compared the effects of two different intravenous fluids, Plasma-Lyte A and 0.9% sodium chloride, on acid-base balance in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. The study found that both fluids can be safely used without altering pH status and blood electrolyte concentration. The research concluded that fluid therapy is a challenging aspect of perioperative care and that further studies are needed in this area.
