Buddhism has a significant influence on the cultural and artistic expressions of Sri Lanka, including its poetry written in English. Accordingly, this study tries to analyse how Sri Lankan poets in English employ Buddhism to convey the themes of peace and tranquility through their poetry. The poets like Yasmine Gooneratne, Jean Arasanayagam, Lakdasa Wikkramasinha, Anne Ranasinghe, Kamala Wijeratne etc,. use Buddhism to convey their philosophies on peace and tranquillity, especially about the JVP insurrection and ethnic violence that Sri Lankans experienced in the 80s, 90s and early 20s. The current research is a textual study of the qualitative approach of research that involves an analysis of the poems by the above poets related to the theme of peace and tranquillity. The analysis of the poems evidences that these poets have used Buddhism in the discussion of these societal conflicts and their complexities highlighting their philosophical background and suggesting solutions according to Buddhism. The poets often use Buddhist principles as a foundation to analyse the true situation and to express their unique perspectives on life, and existence in terms of these conflicts and the quest for harmony. On the other hand, poets like Anne Ranasinghe and Jean Arasanayam are sometimes critical of the behaviour and response to these conflicts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
