Abstrakt: The book "Philosophy of Biology before Biology" explores the philosophical themes underlying the work of historical figures who contributed to the emergence of biology as a unified science. The book consists of eight historical essays that discuss the biological contributions of French and German thinkers from the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. The essays examine the writings of well-known figures such as Georges-Louis Leclerc Buffon, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, as well as lesser-known figures of the time. While the historical essays are the main focus of the book, the introductory and concluding sections provide philosophical reflections on the study of living phenomena before the establishment of biology as a discipline. However, the book lacks a clear unifying theme and may not effectively bridge the gap between historical understandings and contemporary philosophy of biology. [Extracted from the article]
