Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is a coconut oil-based surfactant. This surfactant type is preferred over others due to its mild and less irritative properties. In Indonesia, many personal care products contain CAPB. Nevertheless, to supply the demand of CAPB, Indonesia is still importing this surfactant mainly from China. With the abundance of palm oil production, Indonesia has a great potential to produce surfactants derived from one of the palm oil products, palm kernel oil (PKO). Although the process has been established commercially, especially in China and Japan, there has not been reference comparing process performance according to different patents. In this research, investigation of some production routes and process variables for each reaction stage was carried out. This exploration aimed to obtain a compatible betaine product that can compete with the commercial product. The suitable product was evaluated based on its visual appearance and betaine active matter, which analyzed by two-phase titration. Non-simultaneous reaction and direct SMCA injection produced the product with characteristic and betaine active matter similar to commercial CAPB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
