A study conducted at the University of Kirikkale in Turkey investigated the impact of vitamin D3 deficiency on the peripheral and central odor centers in adolescents using cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study evaluated cranial MRI images of 23 adolescents with vitamin D3 deficiency and 18 adolescents with normal vitamin D3 levels. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the central odor centers between the two groups. However, the study group with vitamin D3 deficiency had a larger olfactory bulb volume on the left side compared to the right side. The researchers concluded that vitamin D3 levels should be measured in adolescents, and those with levels below 20 ng/ml should receive medical treatment and increase their exposure to sunlight for vitamin D synthesis.
