A recent study conducted in the United Kingdom explored the use of selective gut decontamination in critically ill children to reduce healthcare-associated infections. The study involved a pilot cluster-randomized controlled trial in six pediatric intensive care units. The findings suggest that a definitive trial in selective decontamination of the digestive tract is feasible with certain modifications. The study was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the researchers recommend conducting a definitive trial incorporating the protocol adaptations and outcomes from this study.
