A recent study conducted by researchers at Duke University examined racial and ethnic disparities in patient restraint in emergency departments (EDs) based on police transport status. The study found that Black patients were more likely than White patients to be restrained during behavioral crises in EDs. The researchers also discovered that police transport mediated the association between Black race and the use of physical restraint in EDs. These findings highlight the need to further investigate how transport to emergency care can influence disparate restrictive interventions for patients experiencing behavioral emergencies.
