A recent report from the Mayo Clinic Florida discusses the abscopal effect, a rare phenomenon where disease regression occurs in distant sites after local tumor therapy. The report describes a patient with multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma who initially did not respond to immunotherapy but achieved rapid and sustained disease regression after a combination of cryoablation and immunotherapy. The patient experienced a complete tumor response for five years and was successfully bridged to liver transplantation. This research suggests that locoregional therapy, such as cryoablation, may enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapy in cancer patients. [Extracted from the article] |
