Abstrakt: The following paper analyses Anna Seghers' literary European discourse. As argued by Lützeler, literary texts make a great contribution to the articulation of the European imaginary. Starting from the premise that literary texts are embedded in historical and cultural discourses, it seeks to explore which cultural metaphors and topoi of space convey the notion of the European. The aesthetic process of the construction of reality, which will be explained by comparing Anna Seghers' and Wolfgang Iser's views on the dynamics of the real and the fictive, points to the strategies of representation and their function. At this point, the focus will be placed on the Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea and by extension the port Marseille in order to reveal the intercultural and transcultural poetics of space. Nonetheless, not only the cultural representations of spaces, but also the refugee issue, which Hannah Arendt associates with the problem of the European representation of the other, are part of the European discourse.
