The article profiles feminist artist Joan Semmel and focuses on her Sex Paintings and Erotic Series paintings. It discusses Semmel's work in figuration, her approach to painting herself and doubling of figures. Characteristics that set Semmel's work apart from that of other feminist artists are the way her paintings are acts of world-building, the way she finds strength in vulnerability in self-portraits, and the power of her figurative paintings in championing women and queer artists. |
