An electrochemical corrosion study on the effect of additives of lanthanum as an alloying element on the anodic behavior of a BLa lead babbitt (PbSb15Sn10) in a NaCl-based electrolyte medium at a chloride ion concentration of 0.03, 0.3, and 3.0 wt % is performed. The anodic behavior of babbitts is studied by the potentiostatic method at a potential sweep rate of 2 mV/s. The lanthanum content in the BLa lead babbitt (PbSb15Sn10) is 0.01, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 wt %. It is found that, with an increase of the chloride ion concentration in the NaCl-based electrolyte, there is a shift to negative values of the potentials of corrosion, pitting formation, and repassivation of babbitts. The dependence of the free corrosion potential of the lead babbitt on time shifts to the positive area. An increase in the corrosion rate of babbitts with increasing NaCl concentration in the electrolyte is established independently of their composition. Lanthanum additives for the lead babbitt increase its corrosion resistance. It is shown that the lead babbitt is corrodible on the basis of the pitting mechanism, and lanthanum as an alloying element of the BLa lead babbitt (PbSb15Sn10) contributes to a change in the pitting and repassivation potentials to the area of positive values. This results in an increase in the lead babbitt resistance to pitting corrosion and contributes to the healing of incipient pitting sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
