The article discusses the Rhyzopertha dominica or Coleoptera:Bostrichidae in stored home-grown barley. Rhyzopertha dominica is a particularly devastating pest of stored grain and, if left unchecked, is capable of reducing grain to dust. It is of tropical origin and has not previously been considered able to survive the winter in unheated stores in Great Britain. There have been reports of R. dominica associated with a variety of foodstuffs in Great Britain but these have either been imported goods or grain of uncertain origin. R. dominica adults have occasionally been found in home-grown grain on British farms. In March 1980, during an inspection of a large grain store in the south of England a heavy infestation of R. dominica was discovered. The subsequent investigation revealed large numbers of larvae, pupae and adults. The premises consisted of a series of large, unheated, concrete and asbestos stores capable of holding a total about 40.000 tonnes of grain. The barley inspected during the investigation was grown in the south of England and placed in store during August and September 1979. Upon intake the grain was cleaned and dried by a continuous-flow oil-fired drier. |
