A recent meta-analysis conducted in Zhejiang, People's Republic of China, explored the association between varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection and dementia, as well as the impact of antiviral treatment on the risk for dementia. The study analyzed 10 studies with a total of 316,846 dementia cases and found that VZV infection, herpes zoster (HZ), and HZ involving the cranial nerves were not associated with an increased risk of dementia. However, patients infected with VZV who received antiviral treatment had a lower risk of dementia compared to untreated patients. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between VZV infection and dementia. [Extracted from the article] |
