A study conducted by the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow explored the induction of the cholinergic phenotype in mouse neuroblastoma cells using nerve growth factor (NGF). The researchers found that the NB41A3 and Neuro2a cell lines, commonly used to study cholinergic neurons, did not differentiate or exhibit signs of the cholinergic phenotype in response to NGF stimulation. This suggests that these cell lines may not be suitable models for studying cholinergic neurons in vitro. The study was supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
