A new report from the University of Toulouse in France questions the robustness of the induced-compliance paradigm of cognitive dissonance. The researchers conducted a multilab replication of the paradigm and found that there was no significant difference in attitude change between participants who wrote a counterattitudinal essay under high choice compared to low choice. However, there was a significant difference in attitude change between participants who wrote a counterattitudinal essay compared to a neutral essay. The results suggest that the induced-compliance paradigm may not provide strong evidence for cognitive dissonance. [Extracted from the article] |
