In 2023, Australia experienced a series of extreme weather events, including record-breaking rain, floods, heatwaves, and wildfires. These events had significant impacts on the economy and were influenced by climate change. The year began with heavy rainfall caused by the La Niña phase, leading to flooding in several regions. Winter was the warmest on record, resulting in a lack of snow and increased fire risk. September saw a record-breaking heatwave, and October witnessed a compound event of fires and floods in Victoria and Tasmania. In November, a supercell thunderstorm destroyed crops, and in December, Cyclone Jasper caused unprecedented flooding. These events highlight the increasing intensity of extreme weather due to climate change. [Extracted from the article] |
