Pakistan is currently experiencing a shortfall of electricity in the winter, similar to the nationwide blackout that occurred last year. The power infrastructure in the country is divided into southern and northern regions, each with different electricity generation profiles. The consumption patterns in these regions create a "consumption conundrum" due to the heterogeneous mix of electricity generation sources and the reliance on fossil fuel-based power plants. Economic constraints lead to limited electricity generation from expensive imported power plants, leaving the system vulnerable to outages. To address these challenges, integrated planning, a transition towards renewable energy, grid modernization, Chinese investment in transmission infrastructure, and other measures are recommended.
