A recent report from Chungnam National University in South Korea explores the role of mesothelin in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The study found that mesothelin, a marker of solid tumors, is overexpressed in 34.8% of AML patients. The researchers also observed that mesothelin induces metabolic changes in leukemia cells, promoting glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration, which are necessary for rapid ATP supply and cell proliferation in AML. Targeting mesothelin could potentially be a promising approach to inhibit glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration in myeloid cells, thus mitigating the progression of AML.
