A Lexington doctor has been found guilty of engaging in an international money laundering scheme, importing illegal merchandise, and delivering a misbranded drug. Rahim Shafa, the defendant, purchased naltrexone and disulfiram pellet implants from Hong Kong, which are not approved by the FDA. He falsified shipping documents to conceal the origin of the drugs and sold them to patients, implanting them without fully understanding the risks. The charges carry potential prison sentences and fines. The FDA, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement agencies collaborated on the investigation.
