A new report published by investigators from Global Fishing Watch provides insights into the activities of industrial vessels and offshore energy infrastructure in coastal waters from 2017 to 2021. The study found that a significant portion of industrial fishing vessels and transport and energy vessel activities are not publicly tracked, with fishing decreasing by 12% at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and not fully recovering by 2021. The research utilized satellite imagery, vessel GPS data, and deep-learning models to map these activities.
