A study published in Acta Paediatrica examines the impact of communication between clinicians and parents of critically ill neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The study conducted interviews with parents who had received a critical diagnosis for their infants. The findings reveal that the quality of communication significantly influenced the parents' experiences in the NICU. Insufficient or unclear information, delayed or avoided conversations, insensitive language, and an overemphasis on negative information were distressing for parents. The study emphasizes the importance of effective communication in the NICU to support shared decision-making and parental well-being. [Extracted from the article] |
