Reaction of the [B10H11]– Anion with Phenanthrene-1,10-Dicarbonitriles.

Abstrakt: In this study, the reaction of the [B10H11] anion with phenanthrene-9,10-dicarbonitriles containing various substituents has been studied. A series of new mono- and disubstituted nitrile derivatives of the closo-decaborate anion have been obtained, and the structures of the target products of mono- and disubstitution of general composition [B10H9NCR] and [(B10H9NC)2R]2– (where R is phenanthrene containing substituents in positions 1 and 10) have been determined. Along with the formation of the target product, a series of unexpected side reactions associated with the protonation of the polyaromatic systems by the [B10H11] anion have been revealed. The structures and compositions of the products have been determined using 1H, 11B, 13C NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
