On unsteadiness of hypersonic flow over a double cone.

Abstrakt: A hypersonic flow at M=16 over a double cone geometry was simulated using Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method. The simulation was done using a fully three dimensional setting and the results were compared with the corresponding axisymmetric simulations at the same conditions. It was observed that the well-defined closed separation bubble in the axisymmetric simulations does not exist for the three dimensional simulations. Breaking of axial symmetry in the separation bubble and shear and shock layers surrounding the separation bubble was shown with periodic structures appearing in these layers. Further analysis is being conducted for the origins of these instabilities using linear stability theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
