By combining finite element analysis of PLAXIS and machine learning modeling of XGBoost, a new approach to evaluate ultimate pullout load of circular plate anchor in undrained clay using an anisotropic soil model is presented in this technical note. The proposed study aims to numerically investigate anchor stability using a dimensionless ultimate pullout factor that is a function of three design parameters, namely, the embedded depth ratio, the shear strength gradient ratio, and the anisotropic strength ratio. Using XGBoost as a data driven technique, a sensibility study is performed and a series of design charts are presented. It follows that numerical results from XGBoost are further verified with those from published experimental and numerical works, as well as the finite element analysis. In addition, the impact of dimensionless parameters on the formation of failure mechanisms is examined. The study provides valuable insights to the design of ground anchor using the proposed design charts, tables, and empirical equations. It would greatly assist geotechnical practitioners in their preliminary stage of design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
