This document summarizes a study on the relationship between social strain and functional decline in older adults after major surgery. The study analyzed data from over 3,800 participants aged 65 and older and found that perceiving certain relationships as negative or difficult was associated with a decline in daily activities within two years after surgery. The study suggests that strained relationships may lead to reduced support during recovery, resulting in functional decline. The authors recommend assessing psychosocial vulnerability before surgery and exploring interventions to help patients cope with social strain. The study acknowledges its limitations and was funded by the National Institutes of Health. [Extracted from the article] |
