A recent study compared the characteristics and treatment of pediatric-onset ulcerative colitis (pUC) and adult-onset ulcerative colitis (aUC). The study found that pUC patients had a more severe form of the disease, with a higher rate of pancolitis (inflammation of the entire colon). They were also more likely to be treated with systemic steroids, thiopurines, and biologics. The study suggests that the aggressive presentation of pUC at diagnosis leads to more intensive treatment over a median follow-up period of approximately 7 years. [Extracted from the article] |
