A recent report from the Russian Academy of Sciences discusses the use of Tafalgin (Taf), a tetrapeptide opioid, as an analgesic drug. The researchers found that Taf acts as a positive allosteric modulator of acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs), which play a role in nociception and learning in the nervous system. Taf was shown to bind to ASICs in the resting state and slow down the rate of desensitization. The researchers caution that Taf's ability to modulate these channels could have unintended effects in clinical practice and should be considered in patient treatment. [Extracted from the article] |
