A study conducted by researchers at the University of Utah examined the epidemiological trends in gunshot wounds (GSWs) involving the spine and associated spinal cord injuries (SCI) and mortality rates in the United States from 2015-2019. The study found that spinal GSWs were not uncommon, with 8.4% of patients with GSWs having spinal involvement. The most common cause of spinal GSW injury was assault, and the cervical spine was the most frequently affected. In-hospital mortality was high in patients with spinal GSWs, particularly those with cervical involvement or thoracic incomplete SCI. Older patients with more severe systemic injuries had a higher risk of in-hospital mortality. [Extracted from the article] |
